Starting Over?

MY CELL PHONE RINGS loudly, waking me from my tequila-induced slumber.

“’lo?” I mutter quietly, not wanting to fully wake up.

“Hey, Chrissy. It’s Derrick. Are you still sleeping?”

A snippy reply is on the tip of my tongue. “No, what’s up?” I have no idea what time it is, but since he sounded so surprised that I was still sleeping, I’m going to assume it’s not too early.

“While it was great to see you last night, are you sure you are up to this conversation? If you would prefer for me to call you later, I will.”

“No, now’s fine. Let’s just get this over with.”

“Okay. What you think you saw that night . . .”

“I don’t think I saw, I did see. The bitchy waitress sitting on your lap while you guys were kissing. Derrick, don’t play me for a fool.” Now I’m wide awake and sitting upright in bed, hangover be damned. Does he seriously think that he is going to convince me that I didn’t see what happened?

“Chrissy, Felicity was kissing me, not the other way around. She is someone I used to hook up with. That’s it, nothing more. I stopped hooking up with her last season and hadn’t spoken to her until she came to the table to take our order. I may be a jackass at times, but I am not a disrespectful asshole. Even if there were no sparks between you and me, I never would embarrass anyone like that. I also wouldn’t have done the auction if I was involved with someone. I have more respect for a relationship than that. I was sitting there, waiting for you to come back, and thinking about how right Dave was when he said you were someone worth getting to know when Felicity sat down on my lap and started kissing me. It took me about a minute to realize what was going on and then I pushed her off my lap. Shane heard me tell her to get away. That’s when he told me you left. I’ve been trying to talk to you since.”

I sit quietly for a moment. Do I think he’s telling the truth? I feel like he is; there is really nothing to gain by lying to me. I could just ask Shane about what happened. It suddenly hits me. I want to see Derrick again. Before the Felicity incident, we were having a great time.

“Chrissy? You still there?”

“Yeah, I’m here.”

“Do you understand what really happened that night? I promise you, I did not and would not intentionally do anything to embarrass you.”

“Yes, Derrick, I understand what happened. Thank you for clearing that up. I guess I’ll see you around.”

“So, that’s it? Thank you and see you around? Can we please try again? Doesn’t have to be dinner, I’ll meet you anywhere you want.”

“I don’t know.”

“Please don’t say no. Please give me one chance to show you that I’m serious when I tell you that I am interested in you.”

“Fine, I’ll give you one more chance.
